Renewing or Replacing a Green Card: What You Need to Know

A Green Card, officially known as a Permanent Resident Card, is proof of your lawful permanent resident status in the United States. It allows you to live and work in the country and is often required for employment, travel, and other important matters. If your Green Card is expiring, lost, damaged, or contains incorrect information, it’s important to renew or replace it promptly to avoid potential complications.

When to Renew Your Green Card

Most Green Cards are valid for 10 years. You should begin the renewal process about six months before it expires. If you are a conditional permanent resident—typically valid for two years—you must file to remove conditions before your card expires. Failing to renew in time can cause issues with employment verification, reentry into the U.S., and other legal matters.

When to Replace Your Green Card

Replacement is necessary if your card is:

  • Lost, stolen, or damaged
  • Contains incorrect or outdated information (such as a name change)
  • Never received after approval
  • Expired or soon-to-expire

How to Renew or Replace Your Green Card

The process typically involves filing Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You can file online or by mail, depending on your circumstances. Supporting documents and applicable fees are required. After filing, you’ll receive a receipt notice and may be scheduled for a biometrics appointment.

Travel and Employment Considerations

If your Green Card has expired, you may face challenges when returning from travel abroad or proving your right to work in the United States. Having proof of your pending renewal or replacement application can help in these situations, but it’s best to act before your card expires.
